Laura Davis

A Leader in Interdisciplinary Studies

"Here at KSU, I often worry that we likewise may have students like the one I was - young people who care passionately about international and global learning but who may not have the financial means to do so. The recent pandemic also erected new and formidable barriers to international travel for all students. Thus, getting to teach this course, which functioned a bit like a "virtual study abroad," felt so meaningful and timely. Even for students who cannot afford to travel and/or for all of us who could not travel for so many months due to COVID restrictions, we were able to create an opportunity for students to meet peers from another country and to have deep and challenging dialogue as they learned about each other's cultures and beliefs….The presentations and topics our students studied together included topics as diverse as: Moroccan art and music, queer identities in the U.S. South, gender beliefs and practices of Native American Tribes in the Atlanta region, and gender and religion in Morocco. As we traveled through these diverse topics, students often lit up the discussion board with their comments at such a rate that I had trouble keeping up as moderator. They were highly engaged and wanted to know so much from us as instructors, but even more so from each other as peers."
