Carla Wong McMillian initially wanted to become a high school teacher but instead pursued degrees in history and economics, a deviation from what her parents had wished for her. Before the start of her senior year at Duke University, McMillian sought the advice of her high school debate club coach Dr. Bartlett who advised her to apply to law school, which she did, and became a lawyer for 11 years.
While still working as a lawyer under the Sutherland law firm, a couple of judges resigned in Fayette County, where McMillian lives, due to lapses in their judgment. McMillian, a lawyer and an active member in her community, was worried about the judiciary of the county. She decided to apply for the position but later withdrew her application because she thought that the position was not for her. However, after considering her children and wanting to set an example, she applied for the position and was appointed as a State Court judge for Fayette County. She won the re-election in July 2012 and was later appointed to the Court of Appeals and then the Supreme Court of Georgia in April 2020.
Despite her enormous success and without hesitation, McMillian credits and recognizes the community that assisted her family when they first immigrated to Augusta in the early 1990s and the different associations and organizations that provide a safe place for the Chinese population to celebrate their culture. McMillian, therefore, places considerable emphasis on supporting one another and reaching out to those of different backgrounds or cultures like what the Chinese associations did for her family.
Justice McMillian had never anticipated pursuing law or becoming a lawyer and even less so becoming a judge. Her story of success stems from her concern for her community and continues through opportunities continually presenting themselves to her. Justice
McMillian’s family had no ties to the justice system, she knew no lawyers aside from her friends’ dads, and never went to court other than the time her mother was naturalized and officially became an American citizen. McMillian's story serves as a remarkable inspiration and emblem of influence for not only women but also the Asian community at large.

كانت كارلا وونغ ماكميليان تخطط في البداية لتصبح معلمة في مدرسة ثانوية بعد تخرجها. لكن بدلا عن ذلك، تابعت دراستها للحصول على درجات علمية في التاريخ والاقتصاد. قبل بداية سنتها الأخيرة في جامعة ديوك، طلبت ماكميليان نصيحة مدربها الدكتور بارتليت الذي نصحها بالالتحاق بكلية الحقوق، الشيء الذي لم يكن في الحسبان. لكن مع هذا التشجيع، تقدمت إلى كلية الحقوق وأصبحت تزاول مهنة المحاماة في شركة Brennan and Asbill Sutherland لمدة 11 سنة.

حوالي أسبوع في التأمل والتفكير فيما إذا كان ينبغي عليها التقدم للوظيفة الشاغرة لكنها اعتقدت أن الوظيفة ليست مناسبة لها. مع ذلك، تغير رأيها تدريجيا عندما نظرت إلى طفليها الصغيرين وفكرت مليا فيما ستخبرهما به بخصوص خدمة المجتمع. تقدمت بطلب للحصول على منصب قاضية، وعينها الحاكم سوني بيرديو في محكمة ولاية مقاطعة فاييت في أكتوبر2010. قضت ماكميليان فترة أولى ناجحة كقاضية في محكمة الولاية في مقاطعة فاييت وترشحت مرة اخرى لإعادة انتخابها لتفوز بسهولة على منافسها. كما تم تعيينها فيما بعد في محكمة الاستئناف ومن ثم المحكمة العليا في ولاية جورجيا في أبريل 2020.
على الرغم من نجاحها الكبير ودون تردد، تقدر ماكميليان المجتمع الذي ساعد عائلتها عندما هاجروا لأوغوستا في أوائل التسعينات، بل هي جد ممتنة لذلك وأيضا لمجهودات الجمعيات والمنظمات المختلفة التي توفر للسكان الصينيين أحسن الظروف لاستضافة ثقافتهم والاحتفال بها. وبالتالي، تركز ماكميليان جدا على دعم الاخرين والتواصل مع أولئك الذين ينتمون إلى خلفيات أو ثقافات مختلفة، تمامًا كما دعمت الجمعيات الصينية عائلتها.
لم تتوقع القاضية ماكميليان أبدا أن تدرس القانون أو أن تصبح محامية ولا أن تصبح قاضية. تعود قصة نجاحها إلى اهتمامها بمجتمعها واستمرارها في العمل، من خلال الفرص التي أتيحت لها. لم تكن لعائلتها أية صلة بالنظام القضائي، ولم تكن تعرف محامين باستثناء آباء أصدقائها. لم تذهب أبدا إلى المحكمة، اللهم في الفترة التي تم فيها تجنيس والدتها لتصبح مواطنة أمريكية رسميا. فقصة القاضية ماكميليان هي حقا قصة نموذج يحتذى به للمرأة وللمجتمع الآسيوي عامة.
